Though, with all due seriousness, Antarctic policy is amongst the mirad of areas the Welsh are deemed unfit to determine for ourselves. Despite that, Antarctic research is important due to its role in climate science, physics and astronomy.
Wales should become a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, which prevents any territorial claim to the continent, prohibits mineral extraction, prevents military activity and permits peaceful scientific research – which would presumably be university-led post-independence.
As our AMs are so concerned about sustainability – as their enthusiasm for the word suggests – how about we send them on permanent assignment to the front line against climate change? The hot air alone should provide enough low-carbon heat for the research stations down there….
